has anyone tried the webber replacement carb form jk, any reports as im thinking of buying one

Plenty, and its not a great replacement. Won't make you go any faster, will be a pig to set up right and in all likelihood will just drink more fuel.

Just joined the forums as a friend has a T25 camper (no honestly it not that its mine and I'm embarrassed about it) to which he had a Weber carb fitted.

The van has never really worked right since he had it fitted (which was a right bugger by all accounts) - running very rich and drinking a lot of fuel, though the performance seemed OK. A garage gave it a quick retune a week or so ago (it's booked on their rolling road in a couple of weeks) and that improved things. Recently though it has started to stall at idle and lose power at revs (though this may be due to other things and a part of the reason I registered is to do a bit of research and maybe post some questions).

Even so the carb doesn't fit in the engine bay properly - it is too tall and so the engine cover won't go back on properly. Also it only has two mounting points for the air feed from the filter (third one currently covered in gaffer tape). And then there is a lead dangling about the place on the van because there is nowhere for it to go on the carb. Finally a call to tech support (i.e. my dad) revelas that Webers have a reputation for not coming well set up and then needing plenty of TLC.

So our experience would be to try and keep the original carb if at all possible.

(...and the bugger of this is my friend is now really reluctant to try and get the original Pierburg working again because the carb was so difficult to change - if I do persuade him and you aren't put off having a Weber I might know where you can get one cheaply

)

A Weber?
Just kampers

pierburgs are just simply the best twin choke carb you can fit..
once set they will deliver economy and power compared to the weber

if you meant Pierburg then all sorts of cars had them fitted not just transporters.
1600 Astras are the closest with jetting.
Or you can get them at VW shows.. lots of room for haggling
or there are several breakers on this forum

Yes, the Weber came from Just Kampers - and wasn't cheap at all.

Though the mechanic did fit it for free as his cleaning of the Pierburg hadn't done the trick, which I think he regretted offering to do because it took him hours. I'm not sure how much knowledge he has of that carb (or carbs in general as most vehicles have been fuel injected for quite some time) and so how thorough the cleaning and checking was.

Still got the original carb though so I'm going to see if it can be more thoroughly examined to see if it worth putting back on.

ang on..... I have webbers on my van and its lpg's too - I have no problems

What engine are you putting them on? (Aircooled/watercooled engine size...) If you need jetting help there are a few of us on here running them, failing that is masses of info on Volkszone about jet sizes for them.

Once you get used to them they are really easy to set up - but do also go out of balance a fair bit too

you dont say if your van is air cooled or not, they will be different carbs for each, we had a weber on our 1.9dg engine for years, it was never a problem and delivered 23-25 mpg.
they are a simple carb as i remember.

Do you have Webers, plural Doug? Think the op is talking about the chocolate single Weber thing! that JK do. It may not be chocolate though, it may be compressed corn flake packets! Either way not many people have luck with them
