URGENT HELP NEEDED WITH MY CARB.

Post by lowdown8 »

Hi URGENT HELP NEEDED, I am due to go away on monday (26th) and my carb is playing up, does anyone have some information that could possibly help.

I will try and outline the problem, this may not be carb related?. It's a 1983 Petrol 1.9DG.

Basically I think I have a major overfuelling problem on steep hills or under load??

WEBER 34 DAT with FUEL RETURN ON THE FUEL INLET PIPE, FUEL FILTER AND FUEL REGULATOR AT 3 PSI, just before the CARB. (one fuel filter underneath as well)

- WEBER fitted - Initially the van would drive okay as it should, but then suddenly a loss of power and erratic behaviour (little backfiring) until switched off, and then would drive fine again.

- I repaired an air leak on the inlet manifold, this solved that problem. Emissions done, everything good.

- Drove beautifully for a few days, until a very steep incline and full throttle, then sudden loss in power until it stalled, with a backfire and a puff of smoke. 5 seconds and it started up again and once on the level all was good. (so overfuelling)

- Since then, any slight incline is doing the same, overfuelling, and I have to push down hard to get more power to save stalling and its erratic in throttle power, once on the level, all over the place, backfiring until it stalls.

- We cable tied the choke open fully, as there was some looseness in the flap, in case the flap was closing slightly on inclines, then it drove like new, it was great for 15 minutes or so, up a very steep incline and down again and up, and I thought the problem was solved until the flat at the top, where it backfired and was all over the place with throttle power and stalled eventually, this time longer than other times.

- On checking the air filter housing on top of the carb, it has fuel in it, the carb is covered in excess fuel. So basically I have a major overfuelling problem on steep hills or under load??.

- A Mechanic has fiddled with it, and adjusted the float level slightly, but this has made no difference.

CAN ANYONE SHED SOME LIGHT ON THIS? - I have two inline fuel filters, one underneath and one just before the carb.

COULD IT BE A VACUUM ADVANCE ISSUE, OR AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE?

As this is an urgent request, I will say summat :?

I am a bit concerned that it only does it (backfiring etc) under heavy loads (i.e. up hills).

IMHO, it is not the hill that is causing the problem, but the load on the engine.
The backfiring could be causing the fuel to blow back onto the top of the carb and the air filter housing (dangerous regarding fire of course !!)

- Drove beautifully for a few days, until a very steep incline and full throttle, then sudden loss in power until it stalled, with a backfire and a puff of smoke. 5 seconds and it started up again and once on the level all was good. (so overfuelling)

This has me worried a bit.

Loss of power, stalled, backfired, puff of smoke, Ummm
Your assumption of overfueling MAY be wrong.
It could be heat causing a partial seizure, or it could be valves not closing properly when very hot.
The above would cause your symptoms.

Mind you, don't panic (yet) it could be something MUCH simpler.

I am sure someone else will be along shortly with some more suggestions :ok

Why do people keep swapping from the trusty old Pierburgs ?

Ian

IF you've kept it why not bin the Weber rubbish and refit the standard carb (with 1 filter).

Hi, I am buying a Pierburg that should be with me tomorrow, which I am going to fit, but I am concerned that this won't solve my problem.

Reverting back to standard carb with no fuel regulator, 1 inline filter after the tank, standard mechanical pump and new fuel lines should be absolutely fine. VW obviously thought it was ok and hundreds (if not thousands) of us still have the standard set up.

Wot he said!

Weber dealer has agreed to a refund for the carb, woohoo!

Reverting to original Pierburg 2e3 carb courtesy of a very quick sale by 80-90 member H34TON (cheers mate)

I have since discovered my VAC Advance Unit on the Distributor is totally knackered. RESULT!

I think the problem will be resolved very shortly.

:D

I shall use that motto too, being the proud owner of a Weber Go-Anywhere BBQ and with a friend whose Weber equipped T25 isn't currently going anywhere (if you'll forgive the pun)
