The van has been off the road now since bank holiday Monday...
Uhmming and aahing about getting a new engine or doing the work myself....
I have decided to undertake the work to change the big end bearings..... Will include doing the following as well, new piston rings, full gasket change, re-seat valves.
What do you think? I have the help of a mechanic with all the tools to do the work, he done plenty of rebuilds as well.
What other bits should I consider before the engine come out next week and where is the best place to get all the parts, vw heritage seam to be good.
Weighing it up £1400 quoted for a new engine, what do you think I would spend on a rebuild kit??

That sounds good, better than £1400....!!
Anything you see as a problem, this is my first re-build for about 20 years..!! But I have a mechanic on had who has done this thing many times...
Any specific tools needed....

you need to pay attention to the crank though. If you fit a bionic arm to an old lady, the rest soon gives up. Get it checked for play and if its worn, consider having it reground and new oversize bearings fitted. Also examine end play before stripping down too far.

Tools and equipment arriving at the house on Wednesday and engine out on Friday, stripped this weekend for damage location then dismantled...
All good though, planned... new crank (reground ), new bearings, new piston rings, dependant how they look - re lap the valves, full gasket set change, new oil pump. For good measure new stainless steel exhaust back box, lowering springs, new bushes for steering and suspension, new front disc and pads.
Then MOT and happy camping again, not the same in the back garden on a drunken Friday night.........
Basically a new van, how much for a new T5...??

Engine came out Friday night and was stripped to the Crank case yesterday. It turns out that a piece of a valve guide has broken and subsequently ended up on top of the piston. Damage to piston and nearside head, nasty looking........
So a new head and a new piston and things should be good again....
New set of piston rings, full gasket set, engine de-greased and fully cleaned, tin ware cleaning and re-painted, engine bay de-rusted and painted, new exhaust backbox and should be all good again..............
