fan belt problem

Hi all. I've just been trying to change the fan belt on my TD 1600 but having a real problem getting the nut off to undo it. I did it last year (with help), and watched the video on Just Kampers - but there isn't a slot to put the screw driver in to be able to stop the whole thing turning when I try to get the nut off.

I tried to hold the fan bit in place, but with possibly disasterous results - see pic



so, 2 questions please:

1. how do you stop the fan turning in order to undo the nut if there aren't any slots to put the screwdriver in?

2. I've turned the fan around, and though it looks awful, the jutting out metal doesn't touch anything, is it going to be ok??

panicking slightly as I am booked on to ferrt to France on 4 August and going for 4 weeks!

thanks for the post - but no, doesn't help. I can't get the nut off to change the top belt (alternator belt?), just wondering if there is some technique that doesn't end up with a knackered fan!

hadn't realised that I'll need to take the second belt off to get the alternator belt off! Had the alternator out but still can't undo the nut!! might try taking the alternator to a garage to see if they can undo it.

I'm interested in the idea of cahnging over to a single belt. a little worried that it might make the engine overheat though, it has a tendency to do that anyway. Anybody with a JX done it - happy with it or has it made your engine more prone to overheating?

What on earthy are you trying to undo the cooling fan and pulley on the end of your alternastor for?
alt stays put loosen adjustment arm and mounting bolt to slacken off, then waterpump pulley off and well look at robs link

thought that was how to get the belt off - didn't realise it was stuck around the other belt.


have read Rob's link and am going to try again tomorrow - still have the problem of getting to the shims on the top pulley though and making adjustments there.

as you will have gathered by now - I'm trying to learn how to do more on the van myself but starting from zero, so a lot to learn! But thanks to advice from people on here and Brickyard, I am getting better

sorry wasnt trying to cuss you, the shims are on the middle(waterpump pulley) when you split this pulley to get the belt of the shims will e revealed, dont worry, just replace like for like if your not changing that belt and all ios well, there are no shims on the alternator, just the normal adjustment, im carp at searching but Im sure there are detailed instructions in the wiki, sure some one will put the link up for you please

no offence taken! just feeling a bit stupid - had watched the JK video on changing fan belt and hadn't realised it was different set up.

I need to get better at using the wiki before asking basic questions!

been out trying to get to the water pump pulley wheels, but everything is so close to the exhaust I can barely get my hand in, never mind get allen keys in and turning.

Have remembered that I didn't change fan belt last year, it was the AA, (i did work on the alternator with Si - Toomany tools). AA definitley didn't remove the exhaust to change the belt!

Is it normal for them to br very close to the exhust, and do you just have to keep trying, or is there something wierd with my set up? any advice/suggestions very welcome please.

gave up trying to get the water pump belt off and put everything back, adjusting tension by moving the alternator up the bracket as much as I could. the squeal has stopped, but am concerned about what to do when the belt does need changing - spares and AA I guess!
