If I manage to weld the holes in the silencer box on our lt's exaust, I was thinking about painting it with this to try and give it some protection against the elements in the hope that it would slow down the corrosion. Is it likely to help with this, or is it just for tarting it up and making it look pretty?!

i have an empi exhaust which are famous for going dodgy but I paint it every month or so with BBQ paint. Cheap and quick to do. Looks better for a few weeks then time to do again.
Always gonna burn off though. Hammerite do some paint which I may try next but its is quite pricey (but not as expensive as a new exhaust eh?)

I found some VHT (very high temperature) paint in Halfords that you apply with a brush. Seems to have held fine but agree, you'll need to repaint from time to time. None seem permanent.

Any idea what it's called? I was looking in there today and they had stuff for manifolds and enamel for engines but I couldn't see anything that said it was suitable for silencer boxes. Don't think I would mind repainting so much if it's just a case of clambering under the van and slapping it on with a brush, rather than spraying everything else that's nearby!

Was a small tin - about £6 I think - probably their own brand. Matt black. Sat next to the VHT sprays so have a nose. Don't have tin now but vaguely remember it being halfords own. will check their website and see if i can find it for you.

Got it. Lot of these paints (including link you posted) only go up to 300f which may be ok for an engine casing but useless on an exhaust. This is the one you want - rated at 600f
Careful it says 'VERY' high temperature paint and not just 'high temperature paint' - Halfords do both so read the labels well. It has stayed on my exhaust pipes no prob anyway.

Watch it though, you get carried away. I painted all my exhaust pipes, heat exchanger (have one on mine for pre-heat), rocker covers. Was under there for ages...

When I was looking so some I could only find spay paint.
Years ago when I used to have motorbike I used to use 'potblack' on the exhaust system and this would last a good few months. but it was applied with a brush. They also used to do a silver version that would last even longer.
