Front lower suspension ball joint / suspension arm pin/bush

Post by Peepshow Paddy »

Hi there,

So my MOT didn't go so well. I reckon I can sort out most of it, bar any welding etc (rear jacking point needs a patch). Two of the things it has failed on are:

- Nearside front suspension has excessive play in lower suspension ball joint
- Offside front (rear bush) suspension arm has excessive play in a pin/bush

I've had a look on the wiki but couldn't find anything about fixing these - any tips please folks?! Do I need to get new ones? Will they need welding?!

Cheers,

Paddy

First one is a new lower ball joint, pain in the a*** to fit without a press but doable...
Don't get it from Just campers get it from Brickwerks, The Just campers one just doesn't fit.

Second one looks like two new rear trailing arm bushes....
Again get from Brickwerks, then it splits the postage cost.

second one isant very clear , BUT o/s/f suspension arm - so drivers front wheel area

rear bush - doubt it will be the lower arm inner bush (rear of the tie rod/lower arm) prob be the rear bush on the tie bar -goes through the cross member and a comon item.- you will need a set of bushes and middle sleeve but check your tie rod as these can badly wear

easy to change , just takes a little time - not suer what year your van is but early vans are easier than later.

get the bushes/sleeves from brickwerks- do n/s and o/s!

Second one sounds like the upper wishbone bush.
Easiest way to tell is to see whats knackered!

item 2 sounds like upper wishbone bush
easiest way to find out is to jackup the van safely with wheel removed and grab hold of the top wishbone and see if there is play side to side. If so you will need to replace
bushes and possibly the large bolt and eccentric washers. Remember though you will need to reset your camber as this is what the eccentric washers are for.

Brilliant, thanks folks! That's really encouraging anyway, hopefully reducing the welding to just the patch at the back then. Mine's a 1984 1.9 w/c (I must update my sig!)

Where are Brickwerks based? I could try to do this at the weekend if I could get the parts in time...

Thanks Rob - that's a bugger, I'm in north London. Nay matter, I'll order it online and try and find a quiet spot to fix it. I was gonna go to my girlfriend's parents to do it this weekend otherwise...
