Hi guys
I have just put my new gearbox in my van, its a petrol box which I have spapped over the input shaft and bellhousing from the old DM code gearbox. The petrol box is a four speed unit. The petrol box is physically bigger than the dieseil box. Problem is I cannot get the front mount to bolt up and the gearbox mount clashes with the body of the van.
Hi I too have this exact issue, old DM box. the 3-stud mount on the DM is quite tight to the firewall when it's all in there eh? not to mention the length of the DM box being 17 1/2" (from memory) compared with a 18 1/2" long petrol 4 speed that I have (ABB) - that is measuring from where the studs connect to the front gearbox mount to the mating face where the bellhousing goes on.
I'm guessing like me, that (being as box is DM - early) you have early style engine carrier bars with the torsion bar underneath. If so, it appears that these little gems move the engine forward in the van 1 1/4", which appears to be the amount needed in reverse to get the front gearbox mount to attach to the crossmember. That is compared to the later (post 83) style engine carrier bars which shift the engine back by that amount. I'm going with late style this weekend and will see how it goes - luck would have it I got some from another van. Could try sourcing some later type bars, or chop and re weld the engine mounting points backwards an inch or so to suit. bit of a faff that way though.
hope you have the petrol rear gear linkage section too, as it's likely to be different - mine is
I also posed an engine mount q on brickyard, i'll update some pics if successful
I did get all the linkage off the petrol box, had to remove a bracket about the petrol tank, a right bitch to get to as there is an extra support for the early linkage. I have got the petrol linkage in now changed everything but the shifter, but I believe there is difference between the two as using the diesel leaver i cannot get 2nd and 4th it sounds like it is hitting the front of the metal box which is below the gearlever.
I have modified the petrol mount and believe it will work, I will post up pictures when I have finished
I modified the 4 hole transmission bracket to work with mine. I also ended up using the second set of holes with the newer transmission where the rubber mount bolts up. I have a picture of the modified mount on the Samba. I don't think I can link to it from here though. It was fairly simple to do. I had to notch the trans bracket where it interferred with the chassis. I also redrilled the l/s mounting bolt hole about an inch towards the transmission. I then cut of the r/s ear and welded in an angle with a gusset. So far so good.
