T25 stalling, backfiring and high emisions

Post by zaff »

Help!! novice owner of t25 watercooled 84/85. Camper been in and out of garage for last 8 weeks - Many monies later and after a new fuel tank along with replacement spark plugs, rocker cover gaskets, fuel pipe, oil switch, fan belt, gasket washer, clean of carb x 2, clean and blow out of carb idle jet, numerous road & emision tests it remains the same. The garage said they have a hunch it could be the oil pressure to the hydraulic tappets and the next step would be to strip the engine down. Sounds expensive is there anything else that could be done before resorting to this. Friend who I bought the camper off mentioned it has its original pierburg carb and it may be the automatic choke is not cutting off! Has anyone had the same problem and does anyone know of someone in South Devon who is a whizz with these vehicles as local garage is great but not used to dealing with them. By the time the garage has been through everything for the cost of labour alone a new recon could have been put in. Thanking anyone in advance.

I presume they have checked for air leaks , as those are the symptons of a leak.

Hate to say it, but (as I found recently), a clogged air filter will give all those symptoms too

I mention it cos its not in your list. In fact, if anyone would like the above symptoms, my old air filter is going free :rofl

Air filter changed about 8 weeks ago when we did a service with the help of the previous owner (friend). Will check the air filter again have a spare. I would also presume they would check for air leaks but its worth making sure! Getting to know my t25 intimately a lot quicker than I anticipated!! keep reminding myself it all adds to the richness of the VW camper experience!!
