Rubbing noise from rear wheel

Post by Bond007 »

Hi

I haven't looked at this yet, but am going to have to shortly.

I've got a rubbing noise from the right rear wheel, which gets worse when going around a left bend. Sounds like the rear drum brake is rubbing, but the wheel and drum are not getting hot after a run. It doesn't sound like a wheel bearing to me as it's not a rumbling sound.

Anyone had a similar issue :?:

Any ideas on possible causes :?:

Certainly double check the tightness of CV joint bolts as a first port of call. If they work loose you can experience similar noises until finally enough bolts work loose and then wham - no drive. Outers harder to access but you need to check them. Also ensure both hub nuts are tight and secure - wheel bolts too.

jack it up on your squeky side and holding the wheel at 6 o clock and 12 o clock check for any play in the bearing you wont always get any rumbling noise if you have got play you will need to renew the bearings as there not adjustable for want of a better description unlike the fronts :ok i hope there ok ..if not then fill youre pockets with loose change to keep the swear box fed

I have the same problem... we had a screeching/rubbing noise coming from the rear left wheel last year which was solved by tightening the castle nut (or quite bizarrely, driving in reverse for a wee while!). It seemed to go away but I am now guessing that it was due to fewer miles done over winter. Now its back and as before the castle nut has worked itself loose even though there is a fair size split pin holding it in position. Will retighten but reading Bond007 post i may take a closer look at the bearings before i embark on a 2000 mile round trip. Is it normal for the hub nut to work itself loose?

With a torque loading of 500Nm's, and a wacking big split pin, it shouldn't work loose at all

As I have learnt, if it does get loose, then there is an underlying problem that needs sorting :!:

With the distance you are travelling, get the bearings replaced
