How much would a synchro have cost when new?

Caravelle GL Syncro 1.6 diesel cost 47,000 Deutchmarks in 1991; plus 1900 Dmarks for front and rear difflocks and another 6500 dmarks if you wanted a 16" version. Thats a standard GL spec.

A basic SIKA was 38,000 dmarks, plus difflocks etc.

A 14" Dehler Profi Syncro was 69000 dmarks in 1988; plus 1780 dmarks for the diff locks. Add air con at 6000 dmarks, power steering at 1900 dmarks and ABS at 4000 dmarks.

If you can track down the exchange rate (probably about 2.8 dm to the pound according to oanda.com)and then add a premium for import/RHD options you might get near. On that basis the basic Dehler would likely have been well over £28000 which was quite a bit of cash in 1988 without all the extra options you would want.

Got pricing from Boltze's archive at VWpix.org nothing english on there though.

I was told the 14" Syncro Tristar was £24,950 in 1991. Although haven't done any research myself.

I'll go through the paperwork for C-ARW tonight, I think I've got the original sales invoice. It is "only" a vinyl trimmed Caravelle C but twin slider, so that option would have added a good few DM to the basic spec.

Our original bill of sale for the blue one is 62,275.26 DM and that was in July 1989! with no difflocks aswell.

Was it a westy when it was new Pete? If not I wonder how much a westy syncro with twin diff locks would be?

From new it was a westfalia multivan, we put the mosaic westy roof on it last year after we bought it and decided not to do the westy camping interior in it because of how we like to camp. It did come with over the head rear seat cupboard and the wardrobe thingy though.

Syncro was a £4k option in the UK, though that was twin lockers as standard so a european van with less difflocks would probubly have less of a markup.

My Dad bought a rather high spec Caravelle GL auto new in 1987 for about £14k, Had a DJ, big sunroof, electric stuff, PAS (that was over a grand) ABS (about £2k)... The dealer thought he was mad at the time as anyone else spending that much was getting a high spec Audi 100 (we bought it from a car dealer not a Van Centre, as we'd used the dealer before and wern't impressed with the van dealer after they struggled to find a customers Caravelle they were showing us as a demonstrater only to find it in the paint shop as their staff had pranged it in the yard - doubt the owner ever found out.

That should mean a well specced Syncro GL would cost about £18k in 1987, which would probubly earn you a Vogue sticker on the back of a Range-Rover if you so wished! (Range-Rovers didn't then cost what they do now, but its probubly the equivilent of Discovery 4 teratory today - Thats £30...45k I think. Of course today you wouldn't see much change from £45k if you ordered a new Calafornia BiTDI 4Motion so perhaps things havn't changed so much.

I seem to remember seeing somewhere a Syncro pannel van like mind cost about 11...12k at some point (not sure what model year) which really makes you think - you could have 3 normal vans or 2 syncros for the same price - not so surprising few fleet managers chose syncros then.

Tried to have a look for other price lists of the era for rival 4x4s (got nothing on LR90's, and my County/NAM transit brosure has no pricelist (bet they wern't cheep though) but I do have a list for a UMM Alter II (a what I hear you say? Something even less known about than a syncro?) which is probubly from 1990 - £9000 for the basic van body (they are simular style to a Land-Rover but 1/2 way between a long and short wheelbase) or £14k for the top spec Station Wagon (PAS was quite cheep at £368 too). I think I was told UMMs once sold for about 2/3 the price of a simular spec Land-Rover so maybe syncros wern't drasticly overpriced for a 4x4?

interesting to see what wasn't standard, in UK anti-dazzle mirror and fog were in standard extras for most models including the vans, fog light has been compulsory in uk for a good while longer than abroad, 1981 I think it came in over here.

Found an accountants note amongst all the mots and bills:
Bought new 16/7/86. Caravelle C, Twin slider 9 seat 5 speed 1.9 DG, Vinyl trim. Sliding windows both sides, h/r/w, drop-down spare (std?), no radio (still has the blanking plate)
