Lee,
1st and reverse are the 'stroke' as it were on the selector mounted on the gearbox.

1 you need to take out the spare tyre lie underneath the van and have a look at the open ended box under where the gear lever goes through the floor and get someone to work the lever in the cabin.
if it is working right, then when you push down the gear lever to engage reverse the mechanism will have to drop to follow a triangle profile guide so as to not allow you to accidently drop into reverse while driving.
hard really to explain in text.
but when the gearbox selects reverse the shaft going back to the gearbox is rotated at an angle.
check that front box under van first incase there is something after breaking there.

2 when in the cabin pull up the rubber gaiter and you will see two holes in first plate that have 2 holes in the floor that need to be aligned to give accurate gear changing. mess around with this placement to see if you can get it all working properly again.

3 note that with the gear lever in neutral the selector on the gearbox should be vertical, this can be adjusted on the splined section of the selector shaft going to the gearbox.

hope this helps
