Intermittent near stalling and power loss
Hi Chaps , a problem with my T25 1.9 water cooled .
About a month ago after idling at lights and pulling away the power dropped off and on stopping the idle dropped to almost a stall . At the same time the water level/temp light started flashing and the temp guage headed for the end stop just before stalling completely . After a couple of attempts the engine re-started and showed no further problems so I decided to ignore it. I have not used it very much scince probably 30-50 miles.
However whilst driving it yesterday the engine did the exact same thing , red light etc , this time I managed to keep it moving but only by using almost full throttle . No power at all at lower revs . It eventually stalled again at a junction and I thought RAC time !
But no , after a re-start everything perfect again.
Dont know where to start looking for problems really and have not used it since . Any pointers please ??

Re: Intermittent near stalling and power loss
get the engine lid off and go through all electrical connections making sure that they are clean and tight, when did it last have plugs rotor and cap ? is the header tank in the engine bay full to the brim ?
If all the above are ok then take her out for a good run letting her warm up gently before blowing out the cobb web cos by your own admission she hasn't been used much, i bet after a good 30 mile run she's cured
For sale £5500 ono

I'm in my own lill world but its ok cos everyone here knows me !
Re: Intermittent near stalling and power loss
Had a good root around under the cover yesterday and discovered that the hot air intake pipe that connects to the exhaust system was dangling loose . After removing it found the inside had completely collapsed effectively blocking it, as this is controlled by a vacuum device possibly makes sense that all was fine with the van after re-start.
Have been out for a cautious run about locally and all seems ok so far . Will replace rotor arm and cap tho as soon as poss just in case .

Where is this pipe mate? - is it whilst facing engine looking down, to your lower right?
Just that there is a hose in my engine 1.9DG engine bay thats melted a hole through as its leant on an exhaust exchanger - its a fist sized hole. And I was wondering what difference it might make to the engine if I replaced it?

Re: Intermittent near stalling and power loss
HI, yes pipe is lower right side of engine and enables warm air from the exhaust area to a valve in front of the air box to assist in cold starts. Don't think it should melt tho as mine is of paper and expanded metal construction . Maybe the wrong type of pipe has been fitted ??

Re: Intermittent near stalling and power loss
Thanks for confirming
Mine is defo of paper and metal construction and defo has a burnt hole through its side where its leant against the manifold/exchanger.
Was thinking of replacing it - have an all metal expanding hose to fit on instead, but now makes me wonder if the OD is going to be correct. I suppose there is only one way to find out...

Re: Intermittent near stalling and power loss
New distributor cap & rotor arm today , also had lid off the carb to adjust idle speed as still occasionally stalling. During this process & with engine running decided to loosen the pilot jet ...idle speed shot up then stalled. Removed jet and cleaned and replaced . On re - start idle higher and more stable so re adjusted tick over speed. Will take her for a run later . Fingers crossed !
Re: Intermittent near stalling and power loss
have you checked the fuel filter under the van...im sure when the van stalls that the lights you are talking about will light up, the temp light flashes a few times then goes out..it does it every time you start..the temp guage will hang about just aroung the middle or just over.
the hot air intake pipe shouldnt make that much difference i dont think, weve had 2 vans that both dont have this pipe fitted.
whenever we have had stalling probs it is usually always down to the fuel filter or crap in the carb.
if the carb has oily residue in it we found that ours was drawin in bits from the black tower which connects the crank case that connects to the carb at the top, i took this off to clean it and found about a golf ball size pile of cruddy caron type residue in there, i had to chip it out. since i cleared this the van never had a dirty carb problem.....it then got stolen which is another story
