setting lifters

is there a wiki or can anyone jelp with setting hydraulic lifters for someone who has never done it before

i have just spoke to a m8 who says if number 1 is at tdc then you adjust number 8 where the hell is number 8

i`m confused

They are hydraulic and self adjusting, they do no need setting.

ok 2.0l rebuild new cam,hydraulic tappets,engine bearings,piston rings and pushrod tubes
added twin 40 dells

engine went back in the van 9 months ago and was set up per haynes manual and ran noisy but ran
then started running like a bag of
found out the chokes,mains and idles were wrong so changed them to what eurocarb told me van fired up first time no probs apart from the noisy hydraulic tappet

took it for a run about 30 miles got it back left it for about 3 hours and wouldn`t run

managed to get it running for a few mins then it ran sweet for about 5-10 mins no noisy tappets then it cut out and were back to sqaure one with a van that won`t run

have changed tappets to half a turn three quaters and full turn and also how it was before as per haynes but still no joy so today my m8 has had the hydraulic tappets out again and recharged them but still nothing
i have owned this van for nearly 3 years 2 years of that it has been stood on my drive i`m am now at the point of suicide(not really) is there anything anyone can help me with

when it sort of starts it revs and then dies till you cannot hear it then all of a sudden it will rev again then die rev then die

before setting check them bledding rod things in tubes easy to think they are right but they will put everything out if not sat in proper i had probs with timing all due to this use a toch if need be after a good look you will see if any are out, like a target,then losen all start again per wiki/haynes learn tdc @compression stroke its not hard once you understand just took me a while to understand,. good luck

Now although your mate seems to know enough to re-charge the hydraulic tappets (assuming he is doing that correctly) the statement that "the valves not being open at the right time due to the tappets not being charged right" is simply not right.

If the tappets are not operating correctly, the timing of the valves opening and closing is so minutely affected that it would not give the symptoms you describe. (it would cause noisy operation and a lack of power)

Umm, my guess is a fuel issue, but without being there it is tricky to pinpoint.
Do you still have the original carb and manifold ?
If so you could put that back on to check it is not an issue with your 40's.

I would usually say check for air leaks in carb to manifold and manifold to head gaskets, but that would not cause the rev then die then rev and die again thing.

Perhaps check the fuel pump is delivering fuel correctly (make sure carbs are full of fuel, remove a fuel pipe and stick it in a milk bottle, start motor, watch fuel steadily going into bottle, don't cause a fire !!)

Check the advance / retard pipes from carb to manifold aren't leaking ( tho again, this wouldn't normally cause the "hunting up and down" symptoms.

dunno how it has happened but i have checked the screws for the jets and they were wound right in
wound them out 3 turns and the van is now ticking over have been told to wind them out another half a turn


now would the van have driven for an hour with the screws wound right in

ok still back at square 1 with a van that will run when it feels like it which is not very often
think the dells are getting pulled off later and a set of orig carbs going on for now
