slow starter

can anyone point me in the right direction please, my 1984 t25 water cooled has started to hate starting, i turn the key all the ignition lights come on but nothing, it dont even try to start. After a few turns on and off she will start up fine, it dont do this all the time , but seems to be getting more often. jen

mmm sounds like starter motor to me....but before you rip out the purse for a new one ,check.....all wires from battery to starter and earth wires ,make sure they are all secure as it could be just a dodgy connection ...but i would think starter motor! hope it helps!

Thank you i will have a look, think i have a new uprated starter in the shed dont know if it will fit i brought it for a beetle. thanks again jen

Sounds more like ignition switch to me - someone who has dealt with this may be along or do a search.

Mine did the same thing the other day and i had to call out assistance....the elect cable had dropped off the starter motor...Tom

Just a quick get you out of trouble trick, I carry a length of wire with a spade terminal crimped to one end and the other end with 1/2 inch of insulation removed. If you remove the spade terminal on the top of the starter (the thin wire you can just about feel it from the top on a Diesel starter) connect the wire you can then turn over he engine by connecting the free end to the positive terminal of the battery, if you battery is under the seat you just need a longer wire. with the ingition off the engine should turn but not start, if you turn the key to the normal running position then touch the positive the engine should turn and fire up. This bypasses the start contact in the ignition switch which wears away with the constant use and high current and counts out any loose connections between the switch. if you can turn the engine over this way and not with the key the ignition switch is knackered and you will need a new one.
