Adjusting gear linkage

Post by Realize »

Hi

How do I go about adjusting the gear linkage on my 2ltr Aircooled 81 westy?
It's a real pig or sometimes impossible to get first gear.
It was fine until I changed the clutch.

Cheers Jay

Did you put the gear change bracket (one on gearbox) on the correct side of the flange its bolted to? I'm presuming you removed gearbox to fit clutch?

Hi Covkid

Not sure what you mean!
I did have gearbox out and thought I put it back correctly.
Could you explain again please.

Sure. The bracket that bolts to the gearbox (the one through which the shift rod runs) is held on by two nuts ond bolts. The common mistake is to bolt it to the wrong side of the flange on the gearbox which totally cocks up the movement front and back. In other words it can look right but make it difficult or even impossible to get into some gears. Also, with the gearlever in the neutral position, the lever that bolts on to the gearbox should be in a vertical position. You need to get under there to see what I mean. I only mention it because I fell foul of this and had similar problems. One notch out on the lever can also cause probs.
