Can someone confirm what crank bits are here?

Big lumps of metals and spanners.

Can someone confirm what crank bits are here?

Post by fix »

Sorry guys but i have another problem! Im trying to put all the bits on the flywheel end of the crank, im trying to work out the bits i have but want to check.

The three metal rings in the top left are metal shims

The metal ring on the right is the retainer ring

The metal rings with notches on them are what i think are called felt seal rings

I kept everything that came off the engine but dont seem to have a thrust washer, or looking at a diagram is one of the felt seal rings a thrust washer?

Thanks

Are you using a manual to do this or pure guesswork??

didnt you make note of where anything came from when taking apart?

the thin shims are to set the "endfloat" you MUST use 3 and they are/were available in different thicknesses to adjust the endfloat to the correct amount..
The lower ones with tabs, look like the thrust washers 1 either side of the main bearing... you are using new ones?????

the "retainer" with the flats in it, is to keep the shims in place....

Lol its almost like pure guesswork using the Haynes!

To be honest the Haynes was ok when stripping the engine but its brief detail isnt working for rebuilding.

It shows a rubbish "sketch" for explaining about how where the thrust washer goes, and it doesnt actually show the thrust washer just whats its like on the flywheel end, all you can see is a little notch. The notches on my thrust washers are slightly bent one way on both, so im not sure if they are meant to be like that and which way they go. Or if they shouldnt be bent!

I was going to buy new ones, but vwh showed them as not currently available so i better give vw a ring to see if they are discontinued or not.

I tried to look at a diagram on vwh and thats when i couldnt work out which the thrust washer was, and that there is actually two of them. The diagram lists felt rings (which you are saying look like thrust washers) and also a thrust washer, which i guess is the difference between the early and late engines.

I do know about end float with the shims, i will be using a feeler gauge to check :D

When i was trying to split the cases all the bits on that end fell out so i had no chance of knowing which order they went in, i did try!

I think i need to see about getting a Bentley manual if they really are so much better.

Sorry im getting abit of a nuisance now!

Yep, Bentley is whats needed, Haynes is ok for ref and those "smaller" tasks, but assumes that the "mechanic" is familier to a certain extent (either that or they didnt have much of a clue either :rofl ).........
it works better in some areas than others..

Tabs point towards the bearing and the "separation" line of the case... apparently...
part number is 025 105 635 but no price listed from VW so assume they are aftermarket only now...

Yes i think the Haynes assumes whoever is using it has worked on whatever they are doing before, not much good!

I get what you mean about the tabs pointing towards the bearing, not totally sure about the seperation line surely thats after the bearing so the tabs would be pointed both the same way towards it.

I think im going to struggle getting new thrust washers if vw or vwh heritage dont have them.

Thanks Rozzo ive sent you an email!

The Bentley manual is pretty darn expensive but yes I agree its worthwhile though this engine has taken nearly all t he funds i have at the moment.

Ive found the brooklands manual for £20 which i dont mind paying, is it any good? Otherwise i think it will have to be the Bentley pdf

The brooklands looks like this
