Glow plug dash light

Post by wagenbod »

My glow plug dash light takes a long time to go out before cold or hot starting. I would expect it not to come on at all when engine is hot. Don't want the expense of burnt out glow plugs.

Can someone tell me what I'm supposed to looking for? Does this mean a prob with the relay, or is it to do with the engine temperature sender - which is a mystery to me. It doesn't eem to have any wires?

As far as I know, if there's no signal from the temp sender, the light will just stay on for a pre-determined amount of time - so this may well be your problem.

Hard to say much about the sender without knowing what engine we're talking about. My JX has two, one for the temp gauge and one for the glowplugs, but I've no idea how it works on other engines.

Thanks for the help Guys. (1600D non turbo). Yes, Hobopatch, I tend to operate the ignition in a similar way to you. It would be good to get it working though, e.g. no glow when engine is hot.

Found a good website on glow plug and relay checking (Mercedes, though)

Hi wagenbod,

mine always comes on (1600d too) - probably stays on for about 20-30 seconds when cold, less when already warm. Sure it should be less, but it always starts first time...I stick in the key, make sure the kids are buckled in etc, then fire the ignition, and enjoy!

Thanks Wee bugger. That's reassurance. Won't bother any more about that then. Got enough other stuff to get on with. Especially all that brown stuff that's appeared through the paintwork over the winter.

just to re-iterate: when your engine is properly warmed up and only switched off for a short while, the glow plug light (and so also the plugs themselves) should not come on.

Managed to figure out the problem. A blue wire which wasn't connected to the temperature sensor. I'd been trying to work out where it went. Was looking for your average spade connection. Didn't realise it fitted on to this wee thing that looks like the end of a drawing pin! Hadn't seen one like that before.
