I'm thinking of taking myself off to Snowdonia for a few days, never been near the place. Then I read of 3000' mountains. How steep are the roads? Am I biting off more than I can chew?

never had a problem with steep roads, but some are rather narrow and quite precipitous
there's a fab campsite near Llanberis pass, right under Snowdonia, that hires canoes for the river and lake.

Loads of Transhite minibuses, driven by lunatics and loaded with weary D of E 'ers tearing about at weekends. They cope with the hills ok, just don't get too far into the wilds - use an OS map and check for > and >> on roads...
There's also an OK site at Gwyn Gern Uchaf (i think that's right) near Llyn Ogwen. Cosy, hot water/showers/washroom etc.
Ogwen Vally is spectacular and less touristy than Llanberis...serious mountain folk doing their thing

some roads are a bit steep and as said, windy and narrow, that said we take our 1980 Aircooled down and have not had any probs. sure you will love it.

We took our 2 ltr air-cooled hi-top for a trip around North Wales last September. The roads are fine, no worse than North Devon Cornwall and there are plenty of sites ranging from holiday camp standard to muddy field. We enjoyed every minute, although the wind can make a hi-top rock around a bit. We "hid" behind the trees at Gwern Gôf Isaf Farm (just up the road from Gwern Gof Uchaf) and woke up next morning to find most of the tents in the field looking very flat. The site is at the foot of Tryfan and if you've never seen a mountain close up it is definitely one to visit.

And don't be tempted to "run up" Tryfan just because it's close to the road! I have done the North ridge base-summit-base in 3 and 3/4 hrs - but the conditions were ideal and I was with an experienced group of mountaineers
Or get to meet the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue team
There is a nice stroll from the Ogwen Cafe up to Llyn Idwal. The path is solid stone so no mud in the van after

been to cwm idwal many times. walked over the top from snowdon to cwm idwal once, was a hell of a walk though. watch out for low flying jets in ogwen valley. its used for raf training.north wales is a great place for holls, and thats not just caus i live here.

Your in the Uk, you will be fine. If its on the Tom Tom you can drive it

we stayed there on the bank holiday weekend it was very busy and right on a lake good campsite!

We went herehttp://www.forestholidays.co.uk/camping ... elert.aspx for our last bank holiday it was fab been there 3 times before its easy to get there and they do fresh pizzas in the evening and fresh bread in the morning on site they cook there own.
in the village got couple of shops not many but enough (no cash machines) local shop does up to £50 cashback when you buy stuff so you may want to take some extra. Beddgelert is very doggi friendly and it is at the foot of Snowdon (the other side to Llamberis) so has a couple of paths up and you have mol Hebog (another mountain but not as steap as snowdon) there too. there is the welsh mountain steem railway that runs there to so its a lovely spot. no phone signal at all so you realy get the feeling of escapeism from the daily grind thats why we like it so much its our little paradise
