I would appreciate your help! Just returned from a week away in the van which was serviced just before we set off (coolant at the max level) covered just over 500 miles in total and the coolant level is now 1cm above the minimum level. Drove on all road types using all of the gears (not just long stretches in 5th) no real drop off in power and temperature needle sat in the mid position in front of the LED for the majority of the time. On our return journey the weather was hot and the van drove well covering 150 miles carrying 3 adults, 2 children, 1 dog and 1 trailer at 60/65 MPH once again with no temperature problems. The engine is the original 1.6TD.
Grateful for your suggestions and ideas / areas to check. I undestand the petrol engines are prone to water gasket failure, is this also true for the diesels?
Thanks! I intend to start with the easy bits like pipes and connections, is it best to have the engine running for a while for the cooling system to get up to temperature to produce the fault? The thing is I have scared myself after reading a thread on brickyard about coolant loss and water gasket failure, which by all accounts is a major problem, engine out etc. I think it is predominately a petrol engine fault but cannot be sure that the diesel engines do not suffer from the same?
Mine is doing the same at the moment. After a look around I found a leak in the Coolant Distribution Junction. Going to change it at the weekend and fingers crossed it'll be sorted.
Had a similar problem, but at least I could see the leaking. However if I had been on a long drive like yours it wouldn't have been apparent. Basically check out your rear heater under your bench seat. Well thought I'd throw it in there (https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.p ... 4#p7498928" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; post on: Side drainage?).
If no leaks, did they change the coolant? If so it takes time to settle down and you may need top up more than once to get the system completely full. PATRICK
