We too are going first 2 weeks of holidays!! Did last year too but only time that fits in with OH's work.

We travelled 2500miles in 16 days. First day day we decided to just go for it and get as far as we could so wouldn't have to drive so much ohter days. We drove from Calais to Limoges.....450 miles. Tiring but Boris handled it with aplomb.

We then went from Limoges to the Dordogne (Sarlat) then headed to the West Coast then slowly made our way up the West coast ending up at La Rochelle. From La Rochelle we went across the Loire Valley before making our way back to Calais.

I kept a 'Captain's log' but am still not sure I remebered everything we did!

last year we did the trip from calais to bordeaux in the van with two kids and all the kit. we didnt book anywhere and rolled into the two stop offs on the way. my lasting impression is that as you get on the D roads the foot comes off the accelerator and you start to enjoy the trip rather than the getting there. that is why we are going Portsmouth - Le havre this time - misses out the worst of it. it avoids the slog of the autoroute in the north and the hills of the Pas de Calais.

Dont forget that almost anywhere you stop there will be good food, wine and a place to camp.

that's about the best UK post i've read on french trips. mostly people seem to want to belt down the autoroutes and RN's and don't even know that D roads exist.
