Testing/Servicing Westfalia fridge outside the van

Post by poshbuggers »

As I am about to install my interior I thought I would ask if there is any way to correctly test and/or service the Westfalia fridges before installation?

I haven't installed the loom (well, more like half a loom) yet so I could maybe use that for testing purposes?

I'd much rather know it works before going about the hassle of installing it and if I can service it prior to installation surely now would be the time.

Anyone?

You can test the 240v element by simply plugging it in to a mains socket (via a suitable adaptor). 12v you could hook up to a spare car battery if you have one knocking about. Gas is a bit trickier - if you have a gas bottle you could hook it up but I didn't fancy faffing around with gas in my living room.

I just dismantled and thoroughly cleaned all the gas parts and tested the elements with a multimeter - you should be able to find the correct ohm readings somewhere, I forget what they are now. The thermocouple can be tested with a multimeter and a lighter to see what the voltage reads when its in a flame.

as above but also make sure the fridge is completely level if you want to run it otherwise it may not cool and you may want to kick it lol

Oh, and turn it upside-down and leave it that way overnight. Mixes up the coolant stuff and makes it work better.
