Air precleaner

Post by v-lux »

Does anyone have a photo of the air precleaner / snorkel / dust filter thing that was on the VW Classics T3 at Mammut Park?
It was attached to the rear vent, went up on to and along the roof. Had vents cut out facing inboard..

I saw a pic of it somewhere but cant find it now for love nor money.

Does anyone know anything about them? Ive never seen one before, however it has been mentioned to me that it might be a South African part?

Anyone got any info?

I think Mike has some but it featured in one of the VW Camper magazines (will look it out).

The system was a prototype I believe and I have only seen reference to it in the original VW concept drawings.

It looked like a 2 piece moulding held together with Torx/Allen fittings IIRC.

It is pictured in blue in one of the UK brochures as a option for 2WD vans, but I've never, ever seen or heard of one.
Only one I know is the one on the Weltonbummler.

Sorry, it's on a silver van, not blue.
And the rack is black...
Maybe it was painted and put on the Weltenbummler, the brochure above is dates '87.
I wonder why they never made them?
Interesting part, with a dual purpose...

There is a great article about that exact van in the Jan/feb edition of VW camper and commercial

twas apparently a pre production demonstration model (84/85) and had one of the first GPS systems.

The articled calls the air vent covers unique additions, so i suppose will not be a doddle to get hold of?

If you want me to post the magazine to you just PM your address

Thats the one!

Im seriously thinking of looking into these, i reckon it would be a great thing to have on a syncro. I understand getting an original one is not going to happen, however getting them made shouldnt be all that difficult should it?

Make a mock up, get it moulded, reproduce a go go....

Anyone know anything detailed about whats going on inside it?

Guzzi, PM on its way... :ok

I spoke at length with the guy from VW about those and he wouldnt let me poke around. He opened the van for me to look at though but I didnt get to see up in there any more than you did.

Is there a market for those? I think there would be.

Two more piccies...

The main reason i'm really intrigued by it is that ive replaced my original air filter with a K&N apollo, so ive lost the dust trap from the air box.

Given the amount of crap that comes out from that dust trap each time ive emptied it, it has to be a good idea to have a precleaner.

I really dont want a stupid mushroom thing sticking out of the air vent, i'll rip it off in no time.
But something like this would be a really great solution, looks good, looks like its supposed to be there, is quite low profile and (in my case) could probably be made so it would fit underneath my roofrack which would protect it further.

I reckon there would be a market for them, seems like a bloody good idea on a syncro especially.

I think there would have to be left and right versions to cover petrols and diesels (snorkel is in opposite sides depending on fuel type as far as i know)

Not sure why you would want two of them as on the van in the pics? I see in the brochure Simon posted up that it is on both sides of the van, so it seems the original idea was to have one both sides..? Perhaps just to make things look balanced..?

Wouldn't fit a non-tintop but I agree it's a cool accessory.

I may have a version of the original sketches which came from a german mag.

Could certainly be made up in GRP with a little time and effort.
