temp gauge poll

Post by damongrounsell »

this might have been done before but I can't find it so.................
How hot does your temp gauge go and how much does it move,
this is to gauge what mine should be doing and avoid another knackered head
Mine runs on the red light to about a needle widths beyond the light, some times a little more when its first heating up in a morning.

any replies will be usefull
thanks damon

Mine sits about 1mm under the LED (left) on normal diesel and 2 mm under when I run on BP Ultimate.

Mine stays just on the cool side of middle all of the time and just touches the middle line when standing in traffic on a hot day after coming off the motorway. Not seen it go past the middle.

Mine sits at a constant needles width to the right of the LED, hardly moves from there, might creep a little further up on hills. I don't hear the fan at all, I hope it is working. Sometimes it will zoom over to the full right side with the light flashing if I don't check the water level every few days.
Takes ages to get to position as well, I suspect that the previous owner removed the thermostat, but I'm too scared to check in case it starts a whole rebuild.

if the thermostat has been removed it would take ages for it to reach the middle (if it ever did).mines at full temp after about 3miles normally..takes a bit longer in winter though.but when i had a dodgy thermostat it took ages to warm up and wouldnt go to the middle but when giving it some stick it went over the 3/4 mark.must have been stuck too far open for normal driving but wouldnt open enough for a bit of reving.
have you checked for leaking hoses to see if thats why you are using water?

also if the thermostat was removved i think you would get different readings depending on the tempurature outside.

I've got a Westy California too, with a JX 1.6TD engine. My temp gauge used to sit slightly below the light when on a run, but since I had a problem where the light was flashing but needle position was still OK, it now sits @ about 1/4 of the way up from the rest position. Flashing light was a earth problem btw.

Hope this helps.

1.6jx td
temp needle sits to the left edge of the led.
Fan kicks in when needle is in the middle of the led.
Of course this thread could be more useful if people state the conc of the coolant they are using as surely this would dictate needle position. I have a 50-50 mix.
Hope it helps

It seems there is no consistency to the needle position. My Fan has never kicked in as far as I can tell, maybe I should investigate!

I don't think my fan kicks in either - I have been meaning to check mine, but I keep putting it off. I'm a very busy mum (and wouldn't know where to start)...

mine (1.9 dg wbx) would sit at about a millimeter left of led in normal driving condition ,traffic jam after a run it would go up then at about 3/4 mark fan would kick in .fan is quiet compared to road noise best way to no if its working leave it run till temp goes up if no forward air hitting rad then fan will kick in if light comes on or needle shots up or you get nervous kill engine mine kicked in @3/4 i think im right saying if cooling is right ,driving along fan hardley used i know for a while i thought my fan didnt work .oh yeah also 50/50 mix to be safe.
