Weird Problem with an Oil Change
I've just done an oil change on my 1.6td jx and everything was going well until the end. I may just be over cautious but I've changed the oil filter (with it filled up) and then filled up the engine through the usual pipe. I have put in almost all of the 5 litre bottle checking the dip stick periodically and it's taking a long time to register anything on the dip stick! I know its oil so it takes time to drip down into the sump but I've left it a good 20mins and its only a few mm on the bottom, no where near the 'min' mark.
Not sure what to do next, shall I run the engine for a bit or put a bit more oil in? (Before anyone asks, yes the sump plug is back in and the oil isn't dripping down the drain!!).
Thanks in advance.

Re: Weird Problem with an Oil Change
I've just put the lot in and its half way up between the bottom and 'min' point, does a jx take that much oil? I can only find info on the petrol (4.5L).

are you sure the dip stick is going fully home? i wouldnt put any more oil in,4+a half lt is fine any more and you could have problems.

Yup, no leaks at all.
Should I run the engine for a bit? Annoyingly I need to leave early tomorrow morning but guessing its not a good idea if the dip stick is showing a low reading, but the oil must've gone somewhere!!

Re: Weird Problem with an Oil Change
Just checked and yes it has an oil cooler, put this on brickyard so putting it on here:
My dad suggested running the engine for a little but so did it for a very small time and the oil light flashes when I switch the ignition on and then goes out when the engine is running. It purrs nicely with a normal sound and then after a few seconds the tone of the engine idling goes down, not sure if this is normal but definitely didn't do this before.

Re: Weird Problem with an Oil Change
I'm really confused now because tee3 on brickyard is saying if I have an oil cooler (which I do) then it will take more oil.

Re: Weird Problem with an Oil Change
The factory oil cooler fits just above the oil filter on a JX.Its capacity is small & from my own experiance 4.5ltrs of oil is the right amount for the max reading on the dip stick. Are you sure the brickyard is not discribing a external oil filter that fits in the front where the engine coolent rad is.This is sold as a after market kit and yes the engine would need more than 4.5ltrs .When you said it has a oil cooler are you discribing an external kit as i discribed.

Re: Weird Problem with an Oil Change
If the dipstick worked before the oil change and you haven't disturbed the dipstick mounting, then I reckon the safest option is to trust it ! (this is only my opinion of course and I have no experience with Diesels)
Is it on level ground ?
I do know on a WBX the difference between min & max on the stick is not much in terms of oil added.
Have you done an oil change before on this engine ?

Re: Weird Problem with an Oil Change
My TD took 5 litres of oil with a filter change just to bring up to the bottom mark on the dipstick. 6 litres to the top mark, so try putting some more in.

Re: Weird Problem with an Oil Change
Panic over.
I bought some oil and topped it up fine to the correct point. Ran the engine for 5mins and then went for a drive and all seems well. Going to take the van tomorrow and will be taking the van to a job before I go up the cotswolds so will get some time to give the engine a proper run in before setting off on the long journey.
Thanks all for the advice and for having patience with me!
