The vw part number for a DJ is 025115629A I have just ordered the O ring at the base of this as mine has gone hard Don't know if the whole thing is available. Must be a good load of second hand ones around though.

Still no real luck with the dipstick. Found one at a local strap yard which fits but not sure if it's the right one. Can someone please give me the measurement from the top seal to the 'full/maximum' oil level mark so I can check.

Does anyone have the VW part no. for a standard 1.6TD dipstick?

Also have a persistant oil leak from the rocker cover area. Could this be caused by having to much oil in the engine?

Part number is 025 115 611 B and the length from the seal to the end is 69 cms

Thanks for the info! 69cm is way longer than the dipstick I have. This morning I drained the oil and put back 4 litres. The level came up to the minimum mark on the dipstick I have which is 67cm??

I have not measured, but my 1.9 with JX dipstick comes to the same place with 4 litres, I keep it about the min level on the dipstick, have done for 3years+, seems about right

That sounds exactly the same as my un-modified JX dipstick.

Just on the minmum mark with the correct amount of oil in there.

Rob: i think you'll find that the persistant oil seepage from the rocker cover gasket is quite a common thing. You could try putting on a brand new gasket, but you'll probably find it'll start doing the same after a short while...Possibly smear a little RTV sealant on to a new gasket before install, might sort it.....

4 litres is correct for an oil change without the filter change and 4.5 litres with the filter changed

4.5l in mine with a filter brings it spot on the max mark after I've fired it up, just a pitty it doesn't stay there after a few weeks driving! No leaks from the rocker cover at least though (infact not much leaks out anywhere, I think it all goes through the turbo!).

Once had a look at a van with quite a bad oil leak on the rocker cover, think it must have had a later gasget from a 1.9l or something and it had the cover segment around the end of the camshaft intergrated with it. Must have been designed to go with a bolt on cam cover though as when mounted on the studs 1.6's seem to have it sat on top of the rased bit not over it so the gasget didn't seat properly and it made quite a mess. In the end we took the studs out and bolted to cam cover down which solved the problem, though the multipeice gasgets seem to work fine on the studs. You do have the plastic splash gard under the cam/rocker cover do you? That probubly deflects quite a bit of oil spray that would otherwise make it to the gasget thus be more likely to seap through. I've got a splash gard on my JX but I emagine it'd be all to easy for someone to forget to refit one and bin it at some point over the last 20 years.
