Hi,
I have a 14" syncro van. Last night I looked underneath and saw water gushing out from the point where the steel water pipes go into the engine bay. I think that one has split. The water pipes were pretty corroded. Has anyone changed these? Any tips? Bentley states that you need to drop the petrol tank. Can it be done without this? Any comments welcome, thanks.

Re: steel water pipes
Hi. If you are talking about the pipes that go up front to the radiator then the tank does not need to come out. Replace with the plastic ones but remember that petrol ones are different to diesel ones

Re: steel water pipes
In order to upgrade to the plastic pipes, you will need the pipes and the rubber ends that come from the radiator as the plastic pipes are a larger diameter. Ideally you can get 2 sets of rubber bits. This way you can attach to the radiator end easily, then use a section of good metal pipe you have already to bring it from the engine bay to the rear of the plastic pipes using the other pair of rubber pipes to enlarge the diameter to match... Does this make sense!?
I did mine this way, took a few hours on the floor, drain, remove, replace and refill etc.

Re: steel water pipes
There are stainless steel ones available as well
(the plastic ones apparently have a habit of spitting out their brass flange inserts over the years)

Re: steel water pipes
thanks for all help and suggestions - I just need to get started now...
Are the plastic pipes for a syncro the same as a standard bus, and does anyone know a good supplier,
cheers

Re: steel water pipes
Just to bring this up to date - I've stripped out all of the old pipes and the heater hoses which were getting pretty thin. On my syncro I was able to do this without removing the radiator and without dropping the petrol tank. I don't know if this is the same for all syncros but the tank is to the left (looking from the rear) and well out of the way of where the pipes enter the engine bay.
Now to fit the new ones...

Ok - now I've hit a snag
the water pipes at the front of the engine (DG from february '85) are also badly corroded

Does anyone know a supplier?
Also...it has a Webasto auxilliary heater fitted which has metal water pipes that cross the top of the engine. See image at
