Thicko newbie oil level question

Post by Mustang »

Hi guys....don't laugh at me!! ;p

Just checked the oil level when the engine was slightly warm and the oil only comes up to the first mark on the stick. I'm assuming (as with my car) it should be somewhere inbetween the first and second mark. My question is this; can I top up the level with any engine oil? (bearing in mind she has had annual oil changes every year before I got her). Would you recommend recommend a particular oil or can I pop down to Halfords and get a straightforward engine oil?

Thanks for any help ;p

I have a 1988 watercooled petrol T25 Autosleeper conversion....and I love her xx

I keep an eye on mine and top up to the 2nd line when it get's about half way between the two lines (regularly due to an oil leak) using 15w40 Quantum Blue as that's the oil that goes in when the van is serviced.

Hi Mustang :ok

You should always top up with the same oil as went in at the last oil change.

I think many folks on here use a half decent 10/40 non synthetic type.

Do check it regularly.
These engines are a 30 year+ old design and as such will likely use some oil, even if in good nick and in normal use.
I always check mine weekly (as per the VW Owners book) and I check before setting off on any long drive, and again before setting off home from the long drive.
It only takes a mo and could save you from an expensive disaster.

Check your water whilst you have the flap open too  (that tank should be around half full by the way, there are max and min marks on it)
