Heat Exchanger Removal

Post by totallyconfused »

Hi, have a 1600 Aircooled engine. Both heat exchangers have cracked off from silencer box. I have a couple of second hand heat exchangers and want to swap them over. Can this be done without removing the engine??? Any tips and comments appreciated. Cheers, Christian.

Should be possible, however if the exhaust is in that bad a condition the silencer snapped off then its possible that the cylinder head nuts will be an absolute git.

Last thing you want to do is snap one of the studs as that means a head off job to put a new one in. When I have done this in the past I ended up hammering on a 12mm socket onto the rusty 13mm nuts, and was lucky enough that i got enough grip to remove all 8 of the gits! However thats not really ideal, with heat being yer best bet before attempting to remove em.

I could be completley wrong though, and they might be really nice and polite and come off without a fight (hope is always good...... :rollin )

Yeah, when ever the manual says it maybe awkward, hard to get at, it usually means its nigh on impossible!! Have soaked my nuts in penetrating oil. Oh ahhh missus!!! Cheers for the help.
