Which SatNav?

Post by si macc »

I'm going to be splashing out on a satnav (never bought one before) for our holiday in a few months. I've done quite a bit of research and the tomtom seems to come up on top, especially when asking friends. Don't want to fork out loads of money but at the same time don't want to waste it on a crappy one. I've summed up what I've found below:

- Garmin: Good maps & guidance but takes too long to find signal
- TomTom: Best satelite system, good maps, poor customer service
- Other satnavs not really heard great things/no one knows about them

Think I'm gonna go for a TomTom One as they're pretty cheap, but even then I'm still confused as there's so many different permutations of a single model! What does everyone have/recommend?

Google is your best friend here. There's loads of stuff and resources for running cheap sat navs with other software.

Tomtom is good as a base, but there are loads of other options, personally I use iGo on my (previously) ViaMichelin box and it's the best I've come across
:ok
What a long strange trip it's been

TomTom is what I have (One XL, with Europe maps)

You never need to ring customer services. I never have in the 7 years of owning one

I have a Garmin with traffic alerts and I have never had any problems getting a signal. Cost £90 and was a good £60 less than the 'supposed world leading' Tom Tom

It even takes an sd card which allows me to play 1000's MP3's through my stereo and pauses the music for the directions

I use the sat nav on my iphone which is cheap but theres one called the Econav by Vexia that gives you feedback on your speed and gear changes to get the most fuel efficient driving. Some reports reckon it could pay for itself in 6 months in fuel saved.
