New van, LPG, think needs new injectors

Post by jester1467 »

Hi guys,

We managed to find another syncro to go offroading :ok , just a few teething problems.

It is a RHD 2.1i panel van, 1990/H, runs an MV digifant with an LPG conversion.

Engine is a bit lumpy, seems as though its running on three cylinders, on starting up it also appears to rev high and then drop off as if its hunting for fuel? so i`ve done some basics to rule out obvious stuff.
Its been run mainly on LPG and been sat for a while.
Changed plugs, HT leads, rotor arm, oil, coolant. Checked timing, earthing points, did a compression test, checked all plugs sparking in and out of the firing chamber.
It appears as though an injector or two are not working correctly, possbly blocked from being run mainly on LPG.
Running it on petrol at the moment with an injector cleaner to try and resolve the problem, havent done an injector spray test yet, need to try and find where to buy new in case they need replacing, any ideas looked in all the normal net places?

Any ideas on anything else to try? I`m all ears and willing to give anything a go.

Thanks in advance of your comments and humour!!

Stale unleaded does leave a lovely gummy residue! I'd send all four injectors off for a refurb unless you've got a bosch agent or outfit near you? Might just need a good clean.

Managed to check the spray patterns of the injectors last night, 1&2 dont seem to spray quite as much as 3&4... only marginally.
Would this make that much difference??
Changed the air filter, also tried swapping over the ECU with the one on the other van, didnt seem to make any difference.
Still revving and idlining, revving and idling on start up, as if its searching/hunting, then lumpy when warmed up, Any ideas?? :?:
Wot to try next??? :?:

I wont let it beat me

I`m sure we can solve it between us

If you can see the spray difference, then it's significant.
Hunting and lumpy = running rich. Needs more investigation. Temp sensor gone west?

Got four new injectors from german e-bay about 3 years ago. I have just installed them on my motor.

Replaced the crusty but otherwise working old ones.

If the new ones work you are welcome to these old ones. They definitely work, and have been bathed in Shell V-power for the last 27,000 miles.

I presume that the van runs fine on LPG.
I am also putting in a fuel pressure gauge to keep an eye on what's going on there.

How many gauges have you got in your van now?

How come you replaced Bosch yellow injectors for greens? Is your motor cammed and remapped?

Not as many as some of the diesel boys!!

The new green injectors have the same part number as the yellows, so don't know what the difference is. I believe that bosch only made a few different injectors, and that many can be adapted to work on our buses. The duration of petrol squirt is down to the ecu. My engine is 100% standard. The engine is made in Poland, the injectors in Spain and the engine carrier has Canada forged into it!

I had similar problems after swopping a good reliable engine from one vehicle to another, check for air leaks everywhere on the inlet manifold also check the air flow meter, mine was sticking, half closed.

Done all of the suggested tests,

Mike Luxton had it off me for the day and found the inlet manifold on 1&2 was drawing in air and replaced it.

Thanks Mike

Runs like a different van, sweet as a nut. :ok

Will take it out for an offroad trip on Sunday to see how it does, probably over Salisbury plain.

Thank you all for your advice and pointing me in the right direction.
In hindsight it has been a great learning experience :pimp

I`ll get some pics while were out and post them on Sunday night
