getting desperate now

Post by umgum »

ok it`s gone from bad to worse

i will give you the full story

ok 2.0l rebuild new cam, hydraulic tappets, engine bearings, piston rings and pushrod tubes
added twin 40 dells

engine went back in the van 9 months ago and was set up per haynes manual and ran noisy but ran
then started running like a bag of
found out the chokes, mains and idles were wrong so changed them to what eurocarb told me van fired up first time no probs apart from the noisy hydraulic tappet

took it for a run about 30 miles got it back left it for about 3 hours and wouldn`t run

managed to get it running for a few mins then it ran sweet for about 5-10 mins no noisy tappets then it cut out and were back to sqaure one with a van that won`t run

have changed tappets to half a turn three quaters and full turn and also how it was before as per haynes but still no joy so today my m8 has had the hydraulic tappets out again and recharged them but still nothing
i have owned this van for nearly 3 years 2 years of that it has been stood on my drive i`m am now at the point of suicide(not really) is there anything anyone can help me with

my m8says it won`t work properly because of the valves not being open at the right time due to the tappets not being charged right

If it ran for a time without noisey tappets it unlikely to be the problem unlees you are totaly lossing compression unlikey on all cylinders even when they are not pumped up they will start. I would recheck the ignition an fueling again.

Did you adjust the hydro tappets as per haynes manual two&a half turns?.Or correctly half a turn or less .Sorry noticed you said half a turn or more.I did a rebuild on a 2ltr cu and adjusted the hydro tappets two&half on start up it ran okay for a while then started running rough &noisy.I took the cylinder head off and found a bent valve stem i think it was caused by to many turns on the rocker arm and oil draining out of a cam bucket when it had not been started for a while &caused the valve to be stuck open & hit the piston.I replaced the valve and adjusted all the hydro tappets half a turn the engine ran well then.Do a compression test on all the cylinders .Make sure your rocker arm assembly has springs&shims fitted correctly to keep the arms on the the valve stems.I had a recon engine with bodged up rocker arm springs that caused the arms to slide off the valve stems when running. You can check this by seeing if the rocker arms are in line with the valve stems when its running or turning the engine over by hand .Rocker covers off needed for that.

Hello!

Been following your thread.

Quite agree that if engine ran for 10 mins, and you r happy with the compressions, then the problem lies elsewhere.

Most common is air leaks. From personal experience I use only german quality gasket sets, (Serial Kombi), as the brazilian manifold inlet seals r only stamped out on one side. U cant use a silicone based compound here, but a light smear of HYLOMAR across the rest of the joints will give u peace of mind.

Try this 1st ,then we'll look at stop/start electrics. What distribution do u have??

By the way, did u ever come across my little bit of tinware !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????????????
