An opinion on the difference between budget and high quality with oils and I'm not talking about synthetics.

The API classification question: Assuming we have two oils, both displaying the same API classification, both mineral, both the same viscosity but one is Castrol and the other is Carlube, 'I assume' and I know I am digging a big hole here, that although they both meet the prescribed classification, that the castrol is not just double the price because of it's name BUT because it uses better base oils with higher quality additives.
I know that we have the crowed that say 'the Carlube is likely bulk branded' but how can you be sure.
The old Tesco cornflakes arguement, saying they are really Kelloggs in a Tesco box, when we all know this to be untrue and we are just trying to convince ourselves of a bargain.
My earlier statement was just that...not a fact (I'm not a laboratory technician so cannot test the validity or otherwise) that Carlube is a budget brand and of unknown origin...good? bad? indifferant? I don't know but I would rather be sure by purchasing a brand (Texaco/Castrol/Mobil etc)

Local motor factors AND GSF has swapped to Carlube.
Surprising when Fuchs from GSF was more expensive than the VW dealers.
