Overheating!

Post by campercrazy1 »

Hi my new (to me anyway!) van is overheating

the plonker before put the wrong carb on it from an astra (it a 1.9 DG), i have no replaced this wit a second hand ebay carb and it seems to run alot better... BUT

the van is overheating after about 7 miles ish and buzzes at me!

checked coolant and oil, these ar both fine (although coolant looks like pure water at the moment!)
tomorrow was going to check the fan,
but what else and in what order should i check?
any help gratefully recieved :-)

first thing i would check is thermostat,if your only doing 7 miles and it strts to overheat thats about the time the thermostat should open.have you checked to see if the rad is hot after it starts to get hot?there will be a lot of people replying to your prob,as my van used to overheat and went through all the threads on overheating ,finally found out mine was due to pressure cap on bottle, got new 1 now its fine.good luck..

My 1.6td was doing the same thing very repeatedly after 15 miles, I tried flushing and bleeding the system many times, new thermostat, driving it without a thermostat etc with no success. Changing the head gasket cured it. Once you've bled the cooling system, if when you remove the expansion tank cap, there's a few bubbles appearing, it may be a head gasket (once bled, there will be no bubbles at all if the head gaskets are sound).
