Carb issues.

Post by liliball »

Looking for some Pierburg P3 advice. All started when I ran the van too low on juice and she started running like a dog. Fuel filter was full of crud so I bit the bullet and pulled the tank, also full of crud. Replaced the tank and all hoses etc, still running rough. Fuel pump checked ok, she revs ok but won't idle. Assuming now that there's a blockage in the carb. Carbs now on the bench and having a good clean up but does anyone have any suggestions as to any common problem areas to look for. Happy dismantling everything but not 100% on whats what and how it all functions.

Yes, i would personally take out the jets and blow out, also worth making sure that the vacuum for idle/choke is functioning as it should, i posted several times on here a few months ago and got great advice so might be worth searching those posts.
Definately replace all the little vacuum hoses around and in/out of carb. Also one thng that is odd but true is that on some models there was a tiny little valve inside the rubber vac pipe on the rear of the carb i.e. facing rear of vehicle, this seems to be important on some models and not on others so may be worth checking if there is one present and it sclear of crud. You can tell by feeling the rubber vac pipe and if the metal valve is there in this pipe it will feel like a hard 'boil' under the skin sort of thing. Good luck.
Make sure all wires to various parts are located properly after refitting etc as this can make a diffrence if by mistake they go round wrong ways ......good luck.

Cheers guys, thought I'd keep you update. Conical inlet gauze was ok. Float chamber was full of crusty crud but don't think it was actually from the tank, too big to get thru' fuel filter and inlet gauze. Found a big lump in one of the jets so hopefully now all is cleaned and blown thru' she'll be running sweet again. Got a new float chamber gasket from Gower and Lee (very helpful) so I'll build her up tonight and fingers crossed! Keep you posted.

Update on Lili. Carb back in and started fine and idling fine, choke working ok too so that fault seems to be sorted now however!!!!!
Under load she's misfiring now! Have to get the timing gun out, also thought she may have an air leak. Any ideas or experience of this anyone?
