Van will not tick over, cuts out when i slow down

Post by djhammy »

HI Guys my van has been running fine until last night when it suddenly started cutting out when i slow down at lights etc. Started her up today fine but it won't tick over unless i keep my foot on the accelerator it just stops. Managed a drive around but still cuts out every time i have to slow down. Sounds like it's running odd maybe air getting in the carb? Drives ok at higher speed.

Don't know what engine you have but I would be looking at the fuel cutoff solenoid on the carb. Should have a spade connector going to it with a +12v supply with ignition on.

Having read up about fuel solenoids looks like that wouldn't be the case on a normal carb system as they are used on fuel injection models.

sounds like a vac pipe is leaking or the valve for the brakes ( connected to the manifold) is on its way out

if your van has standard carb it WILL have the idle solenoid!

switch ignition on ,(not engine) pull plugs on /off that go to items on the carb! the idle solenoid ( long tube) will click if all is ok!

Yep, either solenoid or a sizeable air leak somewhere on the inlet side. Check brake servo hose hasn't come adrift too.

Mine used to do that when the vacuum pipe which went to the airbox popped off, on the back of the carb there are two vacuum pipes, one to the advance on the dizzy, one off to the cold air doodad on the airbox.
The one to the airbox had braided hose on it and although it looked fine was completely perished inside, couple of quid from a motor factors for some new pipe, as others have said the servo hose perishes as well, Brickwerks do a silicone replacement.

Took van to the garage today. that was fun restarting it 20 times.

My mechanic says its the throttle spindle leaking in air. He adjusted the mix to keep it running on idle but its really erratic. He sprayed the throttle spindles with some kind fluid and it suddenly lept into life as it seeped into the mix.

I will check all the other points though and thanks for the advice.

If you need throttle spindle redone (ie rebushed and trimmed), talk to Roger Ball (Totlands Drive, Clacton) - he's in online BT phone book and does all VW carbs mail order or drop-in. Done several for me over some 20 years and can make many obsolete parts. Very knowledgable and a perfectionist. Also plays a mean blues harp!

Thanks Cov for the info Roger sounds the man!!. I do have my old Pierburg carb so may get that refitted whilst I get the Webber off to Clacton. I replaced the Pierburg 2 years ago mistakenly believing it was up the shoot.

Do you think it wise to check all the other suggestions? It quite clearly changed how the engine ran when the Spindles were sprayed or would there be a certain amount of air getting through any way?

I'm no expert so appreciate all the advice i can get to make the right decision before i splash what little cash I have.

Vac pipes are all ok. Just wondering where the brake servo hose would be.

Cheers

Dave

If it picks up appreciably when sprayed with WD40 around spindle ends - thats the fault.

Worn throttle flap is a known cause of poor idling and cutting out at junctions. Theres too much air getting into fuel/air mix and which carb adjustments therefore have no control over. As I say, Roger specialises in this kind of work and there will be zilch play when it comes back, other than just enough for spindle to turn. Most carb makers use nylon bushes which wear. Roger fits phosphor bronze ones and checks throttle flap shaft for straightness and trueness, adjusting as needed.

Ring him and have a chat if you like - he knows his stuff.

Brake servo pipe is on the left - comes in via engine front wall (ie facing you) and connects to left hand side of engine on inlet.

Roger knows me very well. He does beetle carbs, Type2, T25 and many other set ups. Also makes custom and specialised machined parts for bikes etc.

HI Ralph not sure if you can advice. The said Weber carb is a supposed replacement for my original Pierburg 2E

It isn't quite that straight forward though and the screw holes only match up on 2 so the cover although reasonably flat on top of the carb isn't quite as tight one side as could be. Would that make any difference. I imagine this is the same for everybody who has bought this conversion.

The Weber carb is model number 1889090700.

Just kampers link is below.
