Sounds like fuel is running back to the tank and the fuel pump is having trouble lifting the fuel back up again. A common problem if the fuel pump pushrod has worn too far (under fuel pump) or there is a problem with the pump itself.
A non return valve for fuel can be placed in-line just before the fuel pump. Could help but may only be hiding the real problem.

HI i had exactly the same problem earlier this year. caused me untold grief. In the end we had an electric pump fitted which did solve the problem of starting but but was massive let down when i tried going over 40 mph and the pump couldn't keep up. I Went back to the garage and they managed to source a push-rod which did indeed solve the problem.
