setting up timing with no markings????

Hi all
wonder if anyone can help us out with this please.
Hubby is trying to sort out timing on our 1.6 diesel, Lola.

He stripped it down and then realised that there were no timing marks on it ......doh!!!
Does anyone know how to find top dead centre on piston 1 without having to take the cylinder head off??

There are no timing markings on the cam either.

what a bugger !!!

Oh thats OK as they are different, one has lots of words and the other has nice pictures.
