Whilst adjusting the rear brakes I noticed that when turning the wheel by hand the driveshaft seems to move towards the gearbox once on every turn.
This was very easy to see at the gearbox front mount as it moves too and throw on rotation in the same spot, it actually moves the whole box over about 3 to five ml. The other side is fine.
Any ideas?

yes carry on let the gearbox mount get shagged and introduce some bad vibes into the van and then get stuck on the hard shoulder for a couple of hours when the cv joint breaks up
ffs Fritz just let him service the driveshaft and see what the problem is, if it needs a new cv that's pretty cheap and if it just needs some tlc and molygrease then that's well cheap but peace of mind is priceless

knowing my luck I will end up changing the wrong one.

Rob I would start with the gearbox end just because it's easiest to get to. Strip it down and inspect it. If all looks ok give it a good greasing and reassemble then see if it's still doing it. If so have a look at t'other end.
Mine was making a horrible banging noise and I thought the cv joint was shot. When I stripped it down the joint was fine but the old grease had gone like putty. Gave it a good clean and greasing and it's been fine ever since.
Drop the wholw shaft, you'll never clean and regrease the inner very easily and likely you'd have to drop the outer in any case..
pull the boots away from joint and down the shaft, clean them up and look where the balls run.. any pitting and major wear lines will be clear, on either the inner or outer component of each joint.. pitted or worn cv's should be replaced..
In my experience, its not often a CV joint actually becomes totally beyond repair. Even the most clunky ones go on to give many years of service when repacked with fresh moly grease, and plenty of it. Its also the top most unpopular job and you need a box full of latex gloves so you can keep changing them to keep your hands clean. Recently fitted spline bolts on mine and an extra dose of grease and they've been silent ever since.

Its all adding up now.......
As the gear box is shifting 5mm on every rotation it could explain my problems in setting up the linkage, then add to that the selector seal blowing.
