Gearbox oil leak and gear lever stuck

Post by dogegg »

Hi All,

First problem with the camper! Its a 1984 T25. I noticed some oil underneath the engine before setting off on last journey, I could not locate the leak as it appeared to cover the entire underside of the engine, as I wasn't too far from home and it was getting dark I decided to risk getting it home and checking in the morning. On the way back I was having difficulty getting it into gear and then when I parked up I could not get it back into neutral.

Turns out the oil was gearbox oil (I know which smell to look out for now!) and the mechanic advised that I was stuck between gears as the gearbox had run dry of oil.

My question is how much should I expect these guys to charge, they obviously have to take it away and were good enough to come out when very few garages were interested so I want to give them my business, but in terms of fixing this what would it cost. They do not usually deal with older VW's (but they are a VAG specialist) and have a guy who rebuild gearboxes for them and so didn't really know how much it would cost.

Any responses appreciated!

Thanks

impossible to say what it will cost, these boxes can't select two gears at once or any other nonsense, if it has run dry then 10 miles and it will totally fobarred and beyond economic repair imho
4 speed or 5 speed, petrol or diesel and if diesel turbo or NA, 1.6/1.7 or replacement 1.9 ?
I'd be looking for a good replacement used box or someone who'll take yours in exchange without many questions, ie not me

Thanks Aidan and Mike,

It's a 1.6TD 1991 Golf engine but with the original van's 5 speed gearbox. I'll start looking.
