Has anyone spent any time on the north coast of Spain around Santander? We will arrive there next week after a 24hr ferry crossing and we are looking for campsite ideas? We have two weeks and would like to spend some time at the coast and maybe inland in the mountains. Last yr we drove down to the med coast of France and then back up via the Pyrenees to the Atlantic coast of France. On both coasts we found some great sites with lots of facilities. As we now have a 5month old in tow we would like a site that has a nice pool or a calm bit of sea for swimming in. It would also be great if we did not have to move the van everyday, so a site with stuff around or where we could bus or taxi it to a local town.
San Sebastian is brilliant - don't know about the campsite, we just camped for free in one of the car parks near the university like everyone else there seems to. Gorgeous place and fantastic for an evening of beer and the most amazing snacks in the world.
Hi,
We got Plymouth Santander ferry last June You cant go wrong really. We went as far as Santiago de campostela. Its a great place to go.
Most of the sites we used were fine. There are loads of sites off the main , coast road from Santander to Santiago. The sea can be wild along this coast as its facing the bay of biscay but there are sheltered guarded beaches along the way. We cant reccomend this part of Spain enough we had a completely hassle free holiday.
Go enjoy!
I was told by a friend a few years back that Lekeitio is a beautiful little Basque fishing village and that there is a great campsite very near there in a pine forest and it has its own beach.
Never been myself, but I have no reason to doubt her account ... She ended up living there for over a year Must have ride over some time.

As you point out the ferry is not cheap but for us and our 5month old not spending two days driving each way has been well worth it.
We are now coming to the end of our time in Spain and its been a very relaxing holiday. As we have had a oil leak and a small baby we have not toured about as much as normal... We have spent our time in two camp sites both of which have been great with full facilities. For future reference we first stayed nr a town called Noja about 45mins east of Santander at a camp site called Camping Playa Joyel. Huge site with close beach access. Our 2nd site is west of Santander nr San Vicente, called Camping caravaning Playa de Oyambre. Smaller site but still with everything needed, but not as nr the beach (1km). One thing I would say with these two sites and most others we have seen is they do like to cram them in and I would not like to be here in high season!
