Still won't run right

Post by glyn »

OK i've been having running problems which i put down to the carb so i have changed it for a Weber. I fitted the Weber today and it still won't run right. It will tickover for a short while but then then revs go all over the place and it will cut out, it smells rich and the plugs are sooty. I've changed the plugs and checked the timing but its difficult to do the timing when the revs are all over the place. Last time it cut out there was a bang from the front so i wondered if the tank wasn't venting and getting pressurised so i ran it with the fuel cap off but that made no difference.
When fitting a Weber is it best to bypass the idle stabiliser? Could it be the fuel pump? plus on the weber there is a red wire and a black wire i'm assuming that these are + and earth.
I'm now getting extremely desperate to get this fixed because we're supposed to be going to France in it in a few weeks so please help me out if you can.

The choke worked fine but the vacuum unit didn't so it only worked on the primary venturi, i did buy it second hand and it looked like someone had been at it before so i decided to bin it, i assumed the Weber was a much more simple set up.

No i've still got it but the vac units gone, the gaskets are all shagged and someones tried to repair with gasket goo and god knows what else is wrong with it so thats why i thought i'd go for the Weber but it looks like i screwed up again, so now i've got 2 carbs that are no use to me and i'm £150 out of pocket and still can't use the friggin' van.

Ok, we all screw up.. don't beat your self up. :D
second hand pierburgs are plentyful.. (I saw one on a manifold for £35 at Bustypes... and pierburgs off 1600 astras work too I've learned)

it might be worth getting one off a runner and put it down to experience.

Who's the t!t who keeps advising all these nice new peeps to dump their Pierburgs for Webers ? Is it one of the newly sprung up 'specialists' ? Even if the Pierburg really IS buggered they can be reconditioned at Gasure or the kits bought from Brickwerks.

problem being i live in Ireland so it costs me £25 to get one sent over each time so i'm not taking any more chances in the hope that its a good carb and i can't afford to have this one rebuilt, so "Balls" to the van it can stay where it is.

Put your bottom lip in.. :D

I'm sure some folks on here can offer some extra advice and some may even help with parts.
Owning an old shagged van was never going to be cheap, now was it huh?

dreams cost money and living them costs a little more. :ok

put an ad in the wanted section
look in your local scrapper for an Astra 1600 with a pierburg and use it for spares or fit it.
these lads can offer some local help

I did put a wanted ad in which is where i got the Pierburg from in the first place which has turned out to be shagged. I've just put the Solex back on(see previous posts) and its seems to be running ok, so i seem to have successfully bought 2 knackered carbs.

1. Buy one, a carb
2. Send it to me
3. I will bag it I.e jiffy bag
4. Send ut through as internal mail
5. You get it in the LAD
6. You fit it

cost you nothing but posting it to my house better than 25 pound
