Single Carb Conversion
Hi I have a 2.0 Aircooled 1980 T25, the carbs and hence the van are dying.
I cant afford a dual carb set up and 2nd hand stock pierburgs seem incredibly expensive.
I have been considering one of these

Anyone got experience of them (good or bad), not too worried about mpg more about reliability and ease of set up.
TIA
Ron

Re: Single Carb Conversion
They are a pig to set up right and I've lost count of how many v-dubs, T1's, T2's and T25's I've seen with them fitted only to later end up on a shelf in someones garage. Most on here will tell you that rebuilding or sourcing a stock carb or carbs is always better unless you go down the Dellortos route but you'll need a rolling road to get the best out of them.
Most likely they are worn and need rebushing. Steve Shaw does them, as does Roger Ball in Clacton - that and a regasket and clean should bring them back to good condition. They are already 30 years old so get them overhauled so they're airtight - cheaper route too generally.

Re: Single Carb Conversion
Not to mention a potential fuel consumption increase - not good these days.

Re: Single Carb Conversion
yup single central weber is utter pants, it effectivly strangles your already underpowered motor.
twin icts are just as bad
either get to gasure (steve shaw)
or bung a pair of dual twin choke delortos on it, it will be far more powerful and better on fuel
loads on info on the conversion if you search.

Re: Single Carb Conversion
If you have a knowledgable engineer/turner in your area, just pop the carbs along to him/her and get them to check throttle flaps for play and rebush as required. Then just fit new carb repair kits. Tisn't rocket science.

Spoke to gasure he wont fix them for me (I live in Glasgow they are in Chester it is a drive in service and my van barely drives), Gower and Lee have a 2 month waiting list.
There is a company called Bromyard VW who do refurbs does anyone know if they are any good??
Or does anyone know of anyone else who would be able to help.

Re: Single Carb Conversion
Try Roger Ball after 6pm in Clacton - Totlands Drive. He's in the online phone book. He rebushes to very close tolerances and thats all that wears on them really - you'll need to regasket but he does a top job, he accepts hand delivered or through the mail.
Check the throttle flaps (up and down not in-out for signs of play/wear). If they're worn, it'll never ever idle correctly and be impossible to tune. Roger does all the VW carbs.
