WAITER! I never ordered a mushroom soup!

Post by edoh »

errrrr......
in my expansion tank!

mon amis -

is it too late for the kseal? is it a head gasket job?

how easy (or not) to do with self/a matey? Engine out?

how pricey to leave it with a garage? What might a typical charge be? How long might it take?

uck a duck - you get the bodywork sorted - then the next expense comes hurtling over the horizon!

Oh dear :(

Brings back bad memories for me !

Looks like your liner to case seals are shot :( = BIG job that it is often said is better dealt with by getting a recon motor due to the 100 things that can and often do go wrong when stripping and rebuilding to that depth :(

Mind you, does it have an oil cooler fitted ?
Probably not, but if it has, that is a common cause of oil in the water and dead easy to fix.

Here is a link to a long post that covers the job you will be looking at (note = different symptoms but same job required) = https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=52374" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Here is what mine looked like (and yes after buying 2 dud engines I finally got a recon, all be it a slightly used one, but a good un ) =

.

p.s. = worth remembering that due to the water system on our vans, the residue can take literally DOZENS of flushes to clear it, even after the original cause has been attended to.
Got a new van, but it's a 165bhp T4 [shock horror] Accurate LPG Station map here

thanks so much for your comment -

looks like i had the mushroom soup - and your old engine had the porridge!

weirdly - its still running well -?!? - not overheating - starts first time - sounds fine - but i cant help thinking its only going to be a matter of time before some other symptoms show up -

what symptoms did your old engine show?

my initial thought was to bleed the system - and renew with antifreeze/water - AND add a bottle of kseal - and see if that held - while saving up the pennies for an elite vw engine replacement -

will read the post you mention - and have a rethink -

thanks again for your comment

Oil in the water, water in the oil, it got worse quite quickly and the oil level used to drop noticeably on every journey. Eventually LOTS of clear brown oil was floating on top of the water

Good idea but don't bother with the antifreeze = waste of £20 at this time of year and you won't miss the corrosion protection at this late stage - you will be getting a new engine anyway soon

Remember, if changing the coolant, that sludge will be throughout the system, esp in the main and heater rads. It won't do any harm but will take weeks of flushing before it goes away, even after you have fitted the new engine.

Check those thin pipes for blockages whilst the water is out - to do this blow down them.

Has yours got the oil cooler between the oil filter and housing? because...they often corrode internally resulting in the 'BAILEYS' syndrome.

kevs right -

couldnt see a cooler -

gonna try a flush out next week - and got a mid june booking with elite motors -

is it worth doing the flushing the coolant out myself - or would they do that when putting a recon engine in?

- this is how the wages dissapear!
