Which Lifters?

Post by Steve Goddard »

Hi
Can someone direct me to the section which explains whether or not you have solid lifters or oil filled, as I have a recon engine. There is a sticker on the air filter with a picture of hydraulic lifters on and a red X through it,though this seems a bit ambiguous because it has an arrow that seems to point to zero clearance rather than saying they are not hydraulic.
Ithink, though I can't compare ,the rods are ally with steel tips, though like a prat I didn't run a magnet over them when they were out.
The reason Im concerned is that if I set up on TDC and wind in 1 1/2 turns from zero lash it seems difficult to wind in and I have no compression which would suggest Im pushing the valves off their seats.
I'd like to be sure because the bloke before me paid £1400 for thus engine and of course the last thing I want to do is bugger it up.
Cheers everyone. :)

Sticker on the filter intake is the factory one to say "no adjustment needed" BUT, depending on who has rebiult the engine it could have hydro or solids in..

the 1.5 turns is far too much in my opinion in any case... use half turn from just touching for hydro's..

there is no problem using a "normal" tappet clearance to ensure the engine is running and set up, then adjusting after.. if it has hydro's

Just coz there is no compression doesnt mean they are not Hydro either, you could adjust to half turn and see if you have compression..

If its a 2l air cooled then its easy enough to pop out a lifter, if its a wbx, then its not... Most engines will have hydro's in... do you know whe did the engine? ring them up and ask....
