rattybird looking at first pics (no dissrespect) it looks like a bodge fair play you had a go admiration for that, but funk me look at it now!amazing thats the coluor i wanted but i seem to have orderd gay pink version ,but i like it .open question i was told that a thinned down (proper thin) as a last coat gives a ping effect ie tightening of surface paint,any thoughts there i got along way to get there .! once again smashing thread..

Having done this a couple of times now, I still say the prep is everything. This year I used a cheap sander with wet, wet & dry (soaping down the van before touching it with the sander). Obviously they're not designed for this and lets be clear I am NOT recommending it, partularly if you don't have a proper trip on the power line, but it gave a much flatter, smoother surface than working by hand and the paint went on beautifully. 1200 grade used the same way, followed by a cutting compound would bring it to a highly glossy finish. A good orbital, designed for wet work would seem a good move.

One things for sure, if you allow the prep to slide by, it will kick you in the ass later on. There are areas on Rattlybirds that I would say needed more prep but if you'd seen the surface she was presented with, you'd see the problems she had and appreciate the work put in to correct it.

I still feel that the final layer is dependent on everything done before and there are still those that want a £2k paint job with no effort, using a roller. It just isn't going to happen. However, it is certainly achieveable (with work) and those that mastered the technique will vouch for the raw finish when everything is going well. Personally I wouldn't be looking for that full gloss look until year 2. By then you'll have 2 or three hard coats on it already and enough depth to cut back succesfully. After that, regular applications of canuba wax type 'wonder' products should produce that top quality finish. For others, the raw finish is often 100s of times better than what they had to start with. After all, how long does it take to do a whole side? 10 mins if you're used to it.

Been prepping the van for a couple of weeks on and off...

Weirdly prepped the bottom half more as it's what I can see when sat in the boat!

Thanks to Mark (3rustateers) for the spray it with primer, sand it back and re-fill the grey bits, tip..


Anyhow, a neighbour of mine on the marina suggested using Masons paint...it's been used on narrowboats for years and you can get pretty much any colour mixed.
So I went and bought 3 litres of what I call old english white (gypsy racing cream!)...
Never rollered a van before, and went with a thinning mix of ' weak custard' and started throwing it on. Took the bubbles out with a large dry brush.
This is the first coat, and how pleased am I with the finish!!!!!

Well the time has come for my bus to get some tlc and some new paint. I have been reading this topic for quite some time but never got round to having a go so here it goes more pics to follow :O)
