hi all
my gearbox is leaking oil, so have have top it up for the time being.
my problem was that the fill plug was quiet tight so had to resort to dropping the gear linkage on the gearbox.
its a jx 5 speed. now i have problems changing gear. if i select reverse 2nd or 4th i have trouble getting it out of gear or changing.
1st 3rd and 5th are fine
any help would be good

you know what i did wonder that when putting back together, just seemed to want to sit on the back.
boy is my face red.
note to self pay attention when taking things apart.

No, lots of us have done it and yes it does seem to want to go there. On mine, if I went into first, I couldn't get out again - a great result just as you pull out of a motorway services or something. Luckily I dealt with it before encountering that horror.

and when you mate the cup and ball ensure that the skirt of the boot, you do have a boot don't you, is pulled fully down over the cup and gently push the cup fully up onto the ball and lock off the two m8 bolts in that position, and some lube in the cup having cleaned out the old crud is nice too, hence the boot to keep the lube clean

all done. i found that when i tightened it all up it would drop slightly.
held in place when tightening all is good.
i need to buy a repair anyhow.
thanks again jt
an excellent solution for the economically challenged, as a new one is now over £3.50; and so much better than the usual tear off the remains and leave the crud to get in and wear the parts so it'll never be good again school of maintenance

I'll buy that but sometimes on a Sunday. you have to think about an immediate fix so you can drive on a Monday morning. Sadly thats sods law when something falls to bits - everyone is shut. In my case, the bellows had already gone and by the look of it, had for some time so a bit late to save the day in terms of wear. Might as well have used a sandblaster on that joint.
I should add, Aidan is right on the boot. Without it, you'll get everything our roads can throw at it and it'll wear out (as mine now has) to the point where it just falls out. The cable ties have given it extra time until I can get the whole thing off and repair it properly and fit a new boot...
