hello everyone what a problem I have for you today, top marks to anyone who can correctly identify the problem
1.6 TD JX engine.
Driving home I come to change gear and well no change, it won't go in gear, I rolled to a stop and turn the engine off. I goes into gear, turn the engine on, it won't go in gear. The clutch has stopped working. I guessed the slave or master cylinder but they seem to be working since as I push the clutch down the little lever going into the gear box clutch area as operated by the slave seems to move about 20 degrees. So what has broken in the clutch. If anyone can advise me before its opened up tomorrow I'll be very impressed.

Release bearing has collapsed or the pressure plate fingers have worn through allowing the release bearing to go through the gap, is it really easy to press the clutch pedal??

It's still quite stiff but maybe a little less stiff. But you seem to be in the right ball park I dread to think when the cltuch was last replaced, probably when the engine was 12 years ago.

get the clutch kit from GSF it includes the bearing.

As Kev has put all ways get a 3 piece clutch kit, release bearing friction plate and pressure plate replace the lot, the last thing you want is to have to take it all back out again !

Poss spigot bearing failed.. so input shaft is spinning with crank...

Worth checking in any case...

Spigot bearing.

had exactly the same symptoms....engine off, all gears. Engine on......rock solid, no gears. Couldn't disengage when in gear. Got it home with aa following by putting in first, starting the engine and luching forwards. Was lucky I didn't have to stop (stall) until I got home.....

took clutch off....all good. damn and blast. Spigot not an easy job unless you have a slide hammer.

Clutch kit £85, needle bearing (spigot) less than a tenner.....but I know which one I would rather do.....

alternative method if you dont have a slide hammer..
get a largish bolt or bit of round steel (with a flat end) that fits snuggly (make it fit snuggly) in the spigot bearing/remains.. stuff some nice thick grease in the spigot bearing, put the bolt/steel in a bit.. and give it a good whack with a large hammer.. bearing usually comes out with a couple of good hits and a repack with grease..

M6 rawl bolt, M6 nut, M6 threaded rod, assorted washers and a heavy weight with a small hole through it ... aka a home-made slide hammer.

Let's hope me, Emm and Si toomanypoints are wrong though
