Stalling problems
Hi everybody. Looking for some thoughts: we have a 1.9 petrol engine in our '85 T25 that has developed a slight issue. We have not used it much over winter and only a few journeys this year but it has started to cut out. Can be driven for 10 or more miles without a problem and will then start cutting out when engaging the clutch when slowing to stop. Will start again with the key and do exactly the same at the next junction but then might be fine again a few miles later. We did run out of fuel a few weeks back and thought it might be muck in the fuel line but has had a new fuel filter and a full tank of fuel but is still doing it. Should we give the carb a full strip-down and clean or is there something else we should be looking at? Thanks for any advice.

Hi bellacops, We recentlly bought our van and had the same sort of issues. Ours is a 2.1 auto, and we we're taking her to chedder for a weekend away. We managed to get a couple of miles down the motor way and she felt under powered. When I pulled of motorway to see if all was ok she would cut out at every junction and blow some smoke under acceleration. Does this sound similar?
The next day back at home, and weekend cancelled, I checked everything out and tried a run down the road, to which she was fine and has been since. The only two factors that came to mind were, nearly running out of fuel, a couple of days before, and having to charge the battery before setting out. Have you had a flat battery or no power to the van for any period of time?

Hmmm...the battery did run down over winter and we had to jump start it. The engine is also backfiring (?)

had a similar problem,replaced the vacumn pipes and took top off carb blew it out and jets with an airline refitted ran sweet as a nut after,must have been a bit of crap in the carb

Could be water/dirt in the carb, but could also be vac advance on dizzy not working.. thats as starting points..

I found a technical article that was issued to VW garages, when these vans were just setting out, stating that customers were complaining of running issues after having a service. The article talked about the engine management having a 40 key memory. They recommended that the mechnic go through a start up procedure when re-connecting the battery. I'm not sure if this only applies to autos but its worth trying before spending money and time.
1. start engine with vehicle in park (this won't count if a manual of course)
2. idle for 1 minute.
3. change in to first gear and keep foot brake engaged ( again not easy with a manual)
4. idle for 1 minute
5. take van for easy drive.
apparently this helps setup the engine management.

Thanks guys. I also noticed that the rubber tubing that connects to the box that covers the carb (not very technical description I know, bear with me) is split. Could this be letting in more air than it needs and causing the backfiring? I'm guessing I need to replace this rubber - what would I ask for?

Hi,
Where are you in London? I'm in Lewisham, so if you are reasonably nearby I could pop over one night next week and have a quick check of the usual suspects with you.
I've also got a couple of bits of vacuum hose (what has split on yours) and a bit of brake servo hose (which may also be leaking and causing a popping).....

Hi T25Convert. That is a very generous offer! We are in SE19 but could come to you. I had the engine cover off at the weekend and noticed that one of the pipes into the carb was split and was leaking fuel so cut the perished piece off then end and re-attached thinking I might have solved the issue but is still stalling (and backfiring).

Me and Bellacops have now replaced a variety of his leaky hoses, including brake servo and vacuum pipes to try and resolve this issue.
However, I did notice that you could suck on the dizzy advance hose, and draw air through. I pretty sure this means the dizzy advance is over the hill (bust diaphragm). Could anyone confirm this??
If it is bust, is this this the correct replacement for a 1.9 DG (I'm puzzled, as it links form the T25 page, but it says T2, but looks to be the right bit) http://www.justkampers.com/shop/type_2_ ... 5271h.html
Brickwerks lists one, but only for the 2.1 (and twice the price). Is this the correct part and higher quality?
