Hi all
I've just brought a 81 superviking roof for my tin top, i have it attached to the previous roof and am ok with putting it on apart from 1 concern.
On the donor roof the viking hinges sit so that the bottom edge of the hinge is sitting completely in the gutter. It is pretty obvious that this was in no slight part responsible for the demise of the previous vehicle as the roof has rusted out at these points stopping the water from flowing properly out of the gutter and probabaly flexing the gutter when the roof was up.
From anyone's experience of these roofs would it be ok for me to raise the hinges up 10mm or so to allow the gutter to do it's job. It may be that the hinges have bent over time to sit in the gutter ?? I'm not old enough to remember a new one of these so perhaps some of you might have a clue!!
I have seen the replacement hinges and will prob get a set but dont wanna drill holes in my lovely van till i know 4 sure!!
Also the canvas is in good nick apart from black mildue that has stained it all over. It had been letting water through roof bar holes and sat for some time. Anyone know a good product to deal with this and or a suitable paint to put on the vinyl/canvas that i could tidy it up with after a clean.
Many thanks

Re: Fitting a super viking
Had our viking for a year and a half now it is a great vehicle. it happily sleeps all six of us although does get cluttered quickly!
Our hinges also sit in the guttering which is a really crap idea! not sure about raising them but if you could it would be sensible.
good luck with the fitting

Re: Fitting a super viking
had a good look at our roof today. I am really not too sure if you can mount the hinges outside of the guttering!
MAY JUST BE case of brushing them out to stop blockages, good luck. fyi we have three struts inside
regards
Andy

Re: Fitting a super viking
Cheers, i'm gonna do a trial run to see if i can raise them slightly. Also i'm gonna make the hole smaller and extend the larger bed towards the front of the van. The sliding mechanism seams a bit flimsy so i plan to change the whole mechanism so the bed is much more solid and has a fold over extension to the side. onwards and upwards rodders

Re: Fitting a super viking
Hi
Got them from campershop in the end, the 3mm reinforced ones. I got stainless pop rivets and used plenty of PU sealant/glue behind the hinge.
looks good and i left them natural brass. http://www.campershop.co.uk/viking.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Only mistake was not using a straight edge to put the new seal on the edge of the roof as originally they were not necessarily cut uber straight1
good luck !
