fans , switches, fire

Post by tonyandjulie »

There I was hanging about by the van with the engine running trying to place in my mind that smell that had suddenly appeared. Then I got it, I knew what it was , its that smell you get with electrical fires !!!!!!!

Dived into the front of the van , white smoke wafting up through the demist vents. I realised that the fan switch was on full but there was no air blowing air through the vents, just electrical smoke.

Now, question is....whats more probable,t the switch burnt out or the fan itself ?, and if so, where is the fan, is it the same one as attached to the back of the radiator ?
I have no idea where it came from, or what it is, but it's looking right at me.

Has it worked before ?? Most likely the fan motor has stuck!

It's not the same fan - the one on the radiator is a cooling fan to draw air through the radiator. The heater fan, unfortunately, is behind the dashboard.

I'd be looking in the fuse box to see why the fuse didnt blow too....

might be worth checking all the other fuses to see if any have been fitted with too high amp ones...

Unfortunately its an increasing problem as many of these fans have begun to reach the end of their useful lives. Despite freeing mine a couple of years ago, it is starting to blow fuses fairly regularly and I think the only sure answer is to fit a new fan (under £40) but it does mean whipping the dash out. I'm loath to fit a bigger fuse (even if its still running) as that just leads to fires in the end.

On pre 85 models (or those with Euro fuses), its also on the same fuse as the wipers so it takes out both when the fuse goes - not good at all.
